Beijing Highway Design Research Institute

Technical Workshop on Interchange Design Concepts for
Sustainable Development in China

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

Hosted by the Beijing Highway Design Research Institute

and the China Highway Association

Technical Program Coordination:  Palisades Group USA

Background

Fundamental to China’s future growth is the development of its national highway system.   Using western–based design standards, China has made great strides in designing and building the highway system.  China is approximately the same size geographically as the United States, but has five times the population of the US.  As its population becomes more prosperous and more mobile, there is a need and obligation to investigate alternative interchange designs that can incorporate high-density land use and multi-modal access.

This Technical Workshop will focus on new concepts in highway interchange design that can enhance the sustainability of land use development in China, by reducing the risk of unintended urban and suburban sprawl.  It will feature presentations from prominent highway design engineers from China and the United States.  The Breakout Session will focus on key issues in future interchange design.  Workshop summary materials will be compiled and distributed to relevant highway design organizations in China.  The meeting will be conducted in Chinese with English translation and English with Chinese translation.
