bulletSeptember 2001 - In late September, the Transportation Secretary, Norman Mineta (a former GMATS Advisory Board member) requested that the Director, Captain Christopher McMahon, report to his office to serve as Special Assistant during the national emergency. The assignment will be for an, as yet, undetermined amount of time. Among other things, Captain McMahon will be responsible for helping to coordinate the activities of the “National Infrastructure Security Committee” (NISC) which was established by the Secretary in late September. The mission of the NISC is to bring together transportation industry and DOT leadership in an effort to enhance intermodal transportation security.

bulletSeptember 11 and Beyond- Highway Agencies Respond to Keep America Mobile and Secure - There was certainly gridlock at times, but they were able to empty the downtown area in only 3 hours." This was accomplished by falling back on Y2K planning and training and such measures as changing traffic lights and signals to effectively turn that Tuesday morning into the Tuesday afternoon rush hour.
